Friends of Pennypack Park score a big post-Thanksgiving cleanup

Twenty-five volunteers worked off some Thanksgiving calories during the monthly Friends of Pennypack Park cleanup day on Saturday, Nov. 24. Participants removed 39 bags of debris from the park in the area of Rhawn Street and Lexington Avenue.

Volunteers, with help from five Community Life Improvement Program workers, cleaned along Lexington Avenue from the Northeast Community Center to Brockelhurst Street; along Rhawn Street to Holmehurst Avenue; and the dirt path from Holme Avenue to Sandy Run, although trees fallen by Hurricane Sandy made the path impassable to the group’s off-road vehicles.

The CLIP crew included Jim McCarthy, Mike Beutenmeuller, Chris Kiple, Mike Johnson and Kevin Fitzpatrick.

In addition to 39 bags of trash, the group collected six bags of cans, two car tires, three milk crates, one partial milk crate, part of a shopping cart, a Thanksgiving flag decoration, Halloween decorations, a Continental Tire sign, a displaced trash can, a section of cable wire, two broken umbrellas, one in-tact umbrella, part of an iron, a wrench, scissors, a metal rake, a shovel blade, a pair of jeans, a sneaker sole, an inner tube, a toy guitar, a wallet with ID and a half-case of unopened beer.

There are no park cleanup days scheduled from December through February. The next event will be Saturday, March 23, at the ball field on Holme Avenue behind Nazareth Hospital. Call 215–934-PARK or e-mail to FOPPMonthlyCU@aol.com for information. ••
